  2. ~* How To Play *
  3.  
  4. ~  On The Edge is a solitaire card game that emphasizes card placement.   The
  5. playing table is a large box divided into 16 smaller card boxes.   The corner
  6. boxes are for Kings.   The two top middle and two bottom middle boxes are for
  7. Queens and the two left middle and two right middle are for Jacks.   The four
  8. boxes in the middle are placement boxes for spot cards.   Spot cards may also
  9. be played in the King,  Queen,  and Jack boxes,  but this should be done with
  10. caution. For example, if you play spot cards in all four Jack boxes  and then
  11. draw a Jack to play you will lose the game because you don't have an open box
  12. in which to place it.

  14.     The computer begins by shuffling the deck and turning the first card face
  15. up.  The 2, 4, 6 and 8 Keys are used to move a little square box marker until
  16. a location is selected for placing the card.  Pressing the Space Bar or 5 Key
  17. will be place the card in the desired box unless the play is invalid.

  21.    When placing cards in the boxes there's only one rule:   Kings, Queens and
  22. Jacks must be played in their own boxes.  The boxes are clearly marked on the
  23. sides of each box.

  25.    Once you have placed the first sixteen cards in boxes, you are prompted to
  26. select spot cards in multiples of ten.  For example, you may select a Six and
  27. a Four, an Ace and Nine, or a Two and Eight, to name a few.   After selecting
  28. these, they will be removed from the playing area. Once you have selected all
  29. multiples of ten, press the 'P' or the '+' key to resume play. You repeat the
  30. first step, playing cards from the pile to the boxes.  This process continues
  31. till you either place all the face cards (Kings, Queens and Jacks) into their
  32. proper boxes, in which case you win, or until you are unable to place a King,
  33. Queen, or Jack in a box, in which in case you lose. You can also loose by not
  34. being able to remove multiples of ten, which leaves no boxes available.

  40. ~Below is a description of available keys and what they do:
  41. ~     '2/4/6/8' = Move Block Marker To Select Box.
  42.  'Space' or '5' = Play A Deck Card To A Box.
  43.                   Also Marks Cards On Multiples Of Ten.
  44.      'P' or '+' = Continue Play After Multiples Of Ten.
  45.             'H' = Display help. This help file.
  46.             'Q' = Quit Game.
  47.             'R' = Redraw Screen. In case of line noise.

  49. ~* Scoring *

  51. ~Playing Non-Face Card -------------------- 100 Points

  56. ~* Features *

  58. ~   The game is played in tournament style.  Players face exact duplicates of
  59. hands played by their opponents.  Any score differences are the direct result
  60. of playing skill rather than luck.
  61.  
  62.     Every day, the high scorer (Champ of the Day) receives 5000 bonus points.
  63. These points will be subtracted if another player makes up that day and beats
  64. the current high score, and the new Champ will be awarded the 5000 points.

  66.    Tournament Style requires that all hands be shuffled and stored to file at
  67. the beginning of each month. The first player of the month will see a special
  68. maintenance screen while the hands are shuffled.  This should only take about
  69. one minute on most machines.

  71.    Hot keys are available at the opening Main Menu and at closing Score Menu.
  72. You may select options while a screen is printing.   This is handy,  once you
  73. become familiar with the game and don't need to see the options.

  75. ~* Registered Features *

  77. ~  Once On the Edge is registered, the following features are available.

  79. ~  The game has the Make-Up Missed Hands and Play Ahead Day features of other
  80. JNS Software Door Games, but a new feature has been added in conjunction with
  81. these features that allows a player to also make up missed hands. For example
  82. if 3 hands are allowed per day and you only play two, you don't have to worry
  83. with calling back in the same day. You can call in on any other day and after
  84. playing the current day you can select that day on the calendar and "make-up"
  85. the remaining hands.   These days are marked by an  'h'  on the calendar,  to 
  86. indicating you've played on that day but have hands remaining.
